This February I was delighted to have work selected for ‘Life Room’ an exhibition of drawings and paintings from the ‘Drawing Thursday’ sessions at the Royal Hibernian Academy. The work was selected by Mick O’Dea RHA and Donald Teskey RHA.
Whenever I am in Dublin on a Thursday I usually partake in the life drawing session in the R.H.A as it gives me a chance to really hone my drawing skills. A single pose can be held for up to a day or longer so it gives you the chance to really spend time on a piece. The drawings sessions are great fun and also give one the chance to interact with other artists, spend time outside of ones studio and to socialise. Normally I would view my own life drawings as a warm up activity and a cure for artists block.
My lifedrawing never really sees the light of day, it resides in portfolios and folders so it was a great oppertunity to put it on display and allow it to be viewed collectively alongside the other artists who regularly draw at the sessions. Work from the ‘Drawing Thursday’ sessions at the RHA School will be exhibited in the Bourn Vincent Gallery, University of Limerick from Tuesday February 1st, until Thursday March 31st, 2011

A Unique collection of Life Drawings were today unveiled at the University of Limerick's Bourne Vincent Gallery featuring the work of Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) artists. Life Drawings are drawings of human figures from the observations of a live model and this collection is as a result of weekly sessions of the RHA 'Drawing Thursday' group when the artists would come together to draw using a professional model.
Speaking from the launch Mick O'Dea, Principal RHA School said "Drawing Thursday has brought us together as artists, who share a common belief in the centrality of drawing to the art making process. In a profession where the practitioners spend a good deal of time alone in studios the Thursday sessions provide a centre for the artists to come together and work side by side. The benefit of such an exercise cannot be over estimated, a forum is created where senior artists share the same space to work with less experienced artists."
The exhibition which is free of charge will be open to the public from 1st March to 31st March 2011. Visitors can view the exhibition Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 5:00pm at the Bourne Vincent Gallery in the Foundation Building at the University of Limerick.
The Bourn Vincent Gallery, at the University of Limerick aims to enhance enjoyment and appreciation of visual arts of both Irish and International importance. It seeks to promote an awareness of visual art through the University and among national and international audiences. The Bourn Vincent Gallery is the University's principal venue for exhibitions of contemporary work. It annually hosts six exhibitions including ev+a and the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland Additions.
